"Mr. Collins Has To Choose Between School and a Part Time Job"

B: I'm so busy recently. It seems like there's never enough time.
M: I know. I have the same problem. So much to do, so little time.
B: I remember once when I was in college I took on more htan I could handle.
M: Yeah? Like what?
B: I was taking 15 hours a week at my university and I was working 3 jobs.
M: Wow. That is a lot. So what happened?
B: Well, I was going good for a while, but then I started falling asleep in class and arriving late for work.
My grades started going down, and my supervisors at two of the jobs gave me warnings.
M: Why were you working so many jobs?
B: Well, I really wanted to be independent from my parents. My parents were always bugging me, and
so I wanted to live in my own place. Also I was dating a girl who had expensive tastes...
M: Ahaa. So when di it all finally come to a head?
B: Well, I had this big term project and I had been so busy at my jobs that I hadn't been able to start
getting ready until that week.
M: What kind of project?
B: It was a play for my drama class. I had a really big part in the play, and I had to remember a lot of
lines.
M: Sounds like you were under a lot of pressure.
B: Oh yeah. Well, anyway, the night before the play, i planned to stay up all night rehearsing and
remembering my lines.
M: Uh-huh. So did you?
B: I was really tired and I kept nodding off. Before I knew it, I heard the alarm clock go off. It was
morning! And I had to be at my day job in 30 minutes. I had already been warned by my supervisor, and
if I missed work, I'd probably get fired. So I realized I was going to have to choose between my job or
my drama class.
M: So? Which did you choose?
B: The job paid really well, and I needed the money, so I just couldn't bring myself to quit. So I went
to work.
M: And how did the play go?
B: Awful. I had a big scene near the beginning. I got up in front of the audience with hundreds of
people watching...and I couldn't remember my lines!
M: Oh no!
B: I waited for what seemed like an hour, but was really only a minute. Then they lowered the curtain,
and I was pulled off the stage and replaced by another student.
M: Oh really?
B: Yeah, and I failed drama class that semester.
M: I guess it just goes to show, you have to know your limits.
